Planning Commission reviews plan to quadruple single-family zoning density — Almaden included
San Jose's Planning Commission reviewed staff's Envision 2040 framework, which would let Residential Neighborhood (RN) parcels — most of Almaden's single-family blocks — build to 4x current density. City Council votes August 18. Staff's own numbers also show a jobs-housing conflict the equity argument doesn't fully resolve.

The Billionaire Tax: Prop 40
Will California's entrepreneurs flee the state to avoid a wealth tax? Will the tax generate $100 billion for healthcare? Or will the taxes lost from missing billionaires cost more than the wealth tax?
Prop 41, 42, and 3 -- More tax proposals
Closely related to the billionaire tax are three other measures. Prop 41 tightens rules on any new tax proposed in an initiative. Prop 42 forbids the state from taxing personal property. Prop 3 makes permanent the "temporary" high-income tax to fund education.
Prop 43 requires 2/3 voter approval of local taxes
Prop 43 closes a loophole in California law that allows an initiative from a citizen group for a new tax to pass with a 50% plus 1 vote, while an initiative from a local government requires two-thirds to pass.
